What factors can affect the wear resistance of steel wire ropes?
2025-05-08

In terms of materials

Types of steel wire: Different types of steel wire have significant differences in wear resistance. Generally speaking, high-carbon steel wire has high strength, great hardness and good wear resistance. However, low-carbon steel wire has relatively low strength and hardness, and its wear resistance is relatively poor. Alloy steel wires, due to the addition of alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum and vanadium, have better comprehensive performance and superior wear resistance.

The quality of steel wire: Quality factors such as the purity of steel wire and the uniformity of its internal structure have a significant impact on wear resistance. Steel wires with high purity and uniform internal structure have stable mechanical properties and are less likely to experience local wear or fatigue damage during use.

Surface treatment aspect

Galvanized coating: The galvanized coating can protect the steel wire from the erosion of external corrosive media, and at the same time, it can also enhance the surface hardness and smoothness. If the thickness of the galvanized layer is insufficient or uneven, it will reduce the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the steel wire rope, causing the steel wire to rust and wear prematurely.

Phosphating layer: The phosphating layer can increase the hardness and roughness of the steel wire surface and enhance its lubricity. However, if the phosphating process is improper, the phosphating layer may have problems such as uneven thickness and coarse crystallization, which will affect the wear resistance of the steel wire rope.

Structural aspect

Strand structure: The strand structure of a steel wire rope includes parameters such as the number of strands, lay length, and lay direction. Steel wire ropes with a large number of strands and a small lay length have more contact points between strands, uniform force distribution and better wear resistance.

The material and structure of the rope core also have an impact on the wear resistance of the steel wire rope. Fiber rope cores have good flexibility and lubrication retention, which can reduce the friction between steel wires. Metal rope cores, on the other hand, have relatively high strength and supporting force. However, in the case of insufficient lubrication, it is prone to cause accelerated wear of the steel wires.
